Myths 3 and 4 about Business to Cloud Migration

Myth 3

Data is not as safe in the cloud as it is stored on my technology kept in my business.

Here is the Reality

Microsoft has invested heavily in securing their Office 365 platform; this includes dedicated security teams, security frameworks and a security and compliance admin centre. The security admin centre gives you options such as permissions, data loss prevention, threat management and reports to name a few functions.
Furthermore, all hardware used to provide Office 365 to you as a service is of business grade and is backed up by a 99.9 percent financially backed uptime guarantee. Your data that is stored in the cloud is not accessed by Microsoft staff or Panoceanic staff unless it has been formally requested and approved by you during a support session.
Office 365 is also compliant with industry standards such as;

•    HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley
•    Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA)
•    ISO 27001
•    European Union (EU) Model Clauses
•    U.S.–EU Safe Harbor framework
•    Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
•    Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)

Even though your data is stored in the cloud we recommend you should incorporate an offline backup of your data for redundancy purposes. We can further strengthen the security around Office 365 for your business by offering you the following optional add-ons to an office 365 subscription:

•    Exchange Online Advance Threat Protection
•    Microsoft Cloud App Security

We also recommend that we configure the security and compliance admin centre with policies to protect your data and keep it safe from external and internal threats. If your business requirements are not met by Office 365 security out of the box, we also offer 3rd party applications that compliment Office 365, like:

•    Cirius 365 Encryption
•    Trustwave Secure Email Gateway Cloud
•    Norton Security for Professionals
•    Symantec Endpoint Protection Cloud
•    F-Secure Protection Service for Business
•    Trend Micro Cloud Based Security

Myth 4

Moving to the cloud is either all in or nothing at all.

Here is the Reality

This myth is far from the truth and certainly moving all data and systems to the cloud would be a very aggressive and risky proposition for any business. Like in most transition, a managed piecemeal approach is tighter, balanced and much less of a risk to your business operations.

Office 365 structure was designed and built to complement your current on premise technology in a hybrid model. Integration of Office 365 & Azure can integrate with on premises Exchange server, Skype for business server, SharePoint Server and Active Directory.  For small businesses the separation of these services is not so apparent however it does exist in the background but the size may be more manageable to attend to as one.
For larger businesses, to have a hybrid cloud solution may extend the functionality of your on premise servers with cloud functionality and create a similar experience for your employees. Furthermore, a hybrid cloud solution will offer a reduction of capital investment on future infrastructure hardware or for infrastructure hardware that is due to be decommissioned. Reducing infrastructure cost while increasing your business’ technological capabilities is a good place to be.

For businesses that have an investment in on premises infrastructure we would recommend our enterprise level Office 365 E1, E3, or E5, which is sold with:

•    Unified messaging
•    Cloud PBX
•    PSTN Conferencing
•    Analytics tools for Office 365

There are various benefits of moving all your technology to the cloud, but established businesses adopting best practice change agents are not in the frame of mind to migrate their entire business technology to the cloud in one fell swoop.

In our experience businesses adopt the cloud in stages by migrating a certain function, for example, data storage or email. This approach helps the business keep its operational continuity in a hybrid model but enables the function to offer your employees access to storage or emails from any devices anywhere around the world. Enabling your business to save on cost, become agile and to scale up or down whilst still utilising your on premises technology.

We understand that every business is different and every migration to the cloud has its challenges, but we are confident in our solutions and helping your business take the next step forward.
